$ave at Reiters
"Harry Reiter, right, and his son, David, discuss business outside their Halsted Street store."
“At first, it seemed unbelievable.
“Harry M. Reiter, board chairman of Reiters, Inc., a Chicago home furnishings chain that sells draperies, curtains, linens, and other soft goods was talking about selling the chain’s most profitable store at cost.
“Reiter conceded that there is an angle to this deal: The store, at 6236 S. Halsted, is being offered only to Negroes. Reiter said he is offering to sell the store because he is ‘very much concerned about the Negro problem in urban communities’.”

The store can be seen in this photo of Englewood I posted earlier. It does not stand today, and there are no businesses like this in the area. Englewood cannot support normal stores like this, you would have to go west to Gage Park for upholstery work.
I don’t know if the Reiter family was able to sell the shop before what was left of Englewood went completely to hell like everything else.
